Kushtia-3 MP Mufti Amir Hamza has called Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku an ‘atheist and Islamophobic’. He made this statement during a pre-Friday prayer sermon discussion at the Hatsh Haripur Boro Jame Mosque in Kushtia Sadar Upazila on Friday (March 27).
Criticism of the Minister’s Statement
In his speech, Mufti Amir Hamza said,
এই জ্বালানি ও বিদ্যুৎ মন্ত্রী একজন নাস্তিক এবং ইসলাম বিদ্বেষী। উনার বক্তব্য দেখেছেন? উনি বলছেন—এই দেশে ধর্ম প্রতিষ্ঠা করার জন্য নাকি মুক্তিযুদ্ধ হয়নি। অথচ মুক্তিযোদ্ধারা এখনো বেঁচে আছেন, আপনি তাদের জিজ্ঞাসা করেন তারা ধর্ম বিদ্বেষী কি না।
Translation: This Minister of Energy and Power is an atheist and an Islamophobe. Have you seen his statement? He says that the liberation war was not fought to establish religion in this country. Yet the freedom fighters are still alive, you ask them whether they are anti-religious or not.

Calling the minister ‘incompetent’ in the discussion, Amir Hamza said,
তারেক রহমানকে যে ‘খাম্বা’ বলে ডাকা হয়, তার মূল কারণ এই টুকু। তিনি এর আগেও এই দায়িত্বে থাকাকালীন বিতর্কিত ছিলেন। অযোগ্য মানুষকে দায়িত্ব না দিয়ে দেশপ্রেমিক ও যোগ্য মানুষকে এই চেয়ারে বসানো উচিত ছিল।
Translation: “This is the main reason why Tarique Rahman is called ‘Khamba’. He was controversial before when he was in this position. Instead of giving the position to an incompetent person, a patriotic and competent person should have been placed in this chair.”
Highlighting the energy crisis
In his speech, Mufti Amir Hamza also highlighted the local energy crisis in Kushtia. He said,
মজমপুর বা বিআরবি কেবলের তেল পাম্পে গিয়ে দেখুন কী হাহাকার চলছে। আমি সকাল থেকে মেডিকেলে ছিলাম, জেনারেটর চালানোর জন্য ৫ লিটারের বেশি তেল দিচ্ছে না। বিশাল মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে মানুষের জীবন এখন বিপন্ন। এমন অযোগ্য মানুষের কারণেই আজ এই হাহাকার।
Translation: Go to the oil pump in Majampur or BRB Cable and see what is going on. I was at the medical station since morning, they are not giving more than 5 liters of oil to run the generator. People’s lives are now in danger at the huge medical college hospital. This is the reason for the outcry today because of such incompetent people.
