“BNP Has Taken a 180-Degree Turn After Coming to Power”: Shishir Monir

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Shishir Mohammad Monir has accused BNP of making a complete “180-degree turn” after coming to power. He made the remarks on Monday (April 6) at a discussion meeting held at the intellectual square of Rajshahi University.

Delay in Referendum Implementation Raises Concerns

Shishir Monir said that delaying the implementation of the referendum results is creating uncertainty and could lead the country toward a new crisis. he said, criticizing the current situation,

“রাষ্ট্রপতিকে অশ্বডিম্ব পাড়ানো হয়েছে,”
Translation: “The President has been made to do something meaningless,”

Shishir Monir claimed that nearly 70% of people voted “Yes” in the referendum, but the results are not being implemented properly.

Criticism Over ‘July Reform’ and Political Ideals

He alleged that those who have moved away from the “July Reform” have also distanced themselves from the ideals of Ziaur Rahman. According to him, political promises made during the July movement are not being fulfilled after coming to power. Shishir Monir said that after August 5, people expected a corruption-free system and are no longer afraid of intimidation.

Call for Legal Action on ‘Enforced Disappearance Ordinance’

Speaking about the “Disappearance Ordinance,” Shishir Monir said that if the government truly wants to stop enforced disappearances, it must turn the ordinance into law. Otherwise, the government will have to answer to the people. He also accused authorities of suppressing dissenting voices, saying people face pressure even for posting opinions on social media. In his closing remarks, Shishir Monir warned that if university students take to the streets again, the government may have no option but to implement the referendum results.
