Narsingdi district BNP General Secretary Manjur Elahi has predicted that Begum Khaleda Zia’s funeral could set a record, surpassing even the historic attendance of former President Ziaur Rahman’s funeral. He made this statement on Sunday (30 November) during a prayer meeting organized for her recovery and speedy healing.
Elahi remarked,
বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসে সবচেয়ে বড় জনসমাগম হয়েছিলো শহীদ প্রেসিডেন্ট জিয়াউর রহমানের জানাজায়। তবে বেগম খালেদা জিয়া দেশের মানুষের হৃদয়ে যে জায়গা দখল করে আছেন, তার জানাজা সেই রেকর্ডকেও ছাড়িয়ে যাবে।
Translation:“In Bangladesh’s history, the largest gathering ever was during the funeral of Shahid President Ziaur Rahman. However, Begum Khaleda Zia holds a special place in the hearts of the people, and her funeral will surpass even that record.”
He further added,
‘একসময় শেখ হাসিনাকে দেশ ছাড়তে বলা হলে তিনি দেশ ছেড়ে চলে গিয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু বেগম খালেদা জিয়া দেশের এই মাটিতেই থেকেছেন, জনগণের সাথে থেকেছেন।’
Translation: “Once, Sheikh Hasina was asked to leave the country, and she left. But Begum Khaleda Zia has stayed on this soil, standing with the people.”

During his speech, he also made a strong political statement,
‘খালেদা জিয়া গণতন্ত্রের মা, আর হাসিনা ফ্যাসিস্টের মা।’
Translation: “Khaleda Zia is the Mother of Democracy, while Hasina is the Mother of Fascism.”
Manjur Elahi emphasized the people’s love for Khaleda Zia, saying,
বিএনপি বা দলের নেতাকর্মীরা এ মুহূর্তে কোনোভাবেই বেগম জিয়ার অনুপস্থিতি কামনা করে না, তবে বাস্তবতা হচ্ছে—এই দেশের জনগণ তার প্রতি যে ভালোবাসা রাখে, প্রয়োজনে সেই জানাজা হবে দেশের ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে বড় জমায়েত।
Translation: “BNP or its leaders do not wish for her absence in any way, but the reality is that the love people have for her is immense. If necessary, her funeral will be the largest gathering in the history of this country.”
The prayer meeting was attended by leaders and workers from the Narsingdi district BNP and its affiliated organizations at various levels.
His prediction that her funeral could break historical records reflects not just political sentiment but also the emotional connection she holds with the people of Bangladesh. Whether in health or beyond, Khaleda Zia’s legacy as a steadfast leader and the “Mother of Democracy” continues to resonate strongly across the nation.
