Doctors say the child had no injuries and was abandoned minutes after birth
In the silent hours before dawn, when the river town of Nabadwip in West Bengal’s Nadia district was still asleep under a cold winter sky, something extraordinary unfolded in the railway workers’ colony.
A newborn baby, only a few hours old and still stained with blood from birth, lay on the icy ground outside a public bathroom. There was no blanket, no note, and no sign of the mother. Yet the child was not alone.
What residents witnessed next is now being told with hushed awe, as if speaking of a miracle. A group of stray dogs the same dogs people often chase away had surrounded the infant in a perfect circle. They did not bark, attack, or move away. They simply stood guard, keeping watch through the night.
Sukla Mondal a resident, , one of the first to spot the child said that-

“When we woke up, we saw something that still gives us goosebumps. The dogs weren’t aggressive. They looked alert. As if they understood the baby was trying to survive”
Another resident, Subhash Pal, said he woke up hearing a faint cry around dawn.
“I thought some family had a sick baby. Never imagined a newborn was lying outside, with dogs watching over. They behaved like sentries.”
It was only when Sukla slowly approached, speaking softly, that the dogs gently stepped aside, opening their circle to let her through. She wrapped the shivering baby in her dupatta and called for help.
Rescue and Medical Care
The newborn was rushed to Maheshganj Hospital, then referred to Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital.
Doctors later confirmed that the child had no injuries and that the blood on the head came from birth, indicating that the abandonment happened just minutes before the baby was discovered.
Police believe someone from the neighbourhood may have secretly placed the newborn outside during the night. Nabadwip Police and Child Help authorities have begun inquiries and initiated procedures to ensure the baby’s long-term safety and care.
Even as officials handle the legalities, the town is struggling to process what the animals did. A railway worker said-
“These are the same dogs we complain about. But they showed more humanity than the person who abandoned that child.”
Old residents of Nabadwip connected the moment to the spiritual soul of the town. Many recalled the compassion taught by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the 15th-century saint born here, whose message of empathy still shapes the town’s identity. an elderly resident said quietly that-
“Maybe that spirit worked through those animals.”
As evening came, children from the colony were giving biscuits to the dogs that had protected the newborn. A teenager stroked a brown stray and said simply, “They saved the baby.”
