BNP announced 36 new candidates out of 63 previously vacant seats
Speculation had been building for weeks around whether Mir Mahbubur Rahman (Snigdho), the former Chief Executive of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation, would secure the BNP nomination for the Dhaka-18 constituency. His name circulated widely within political circles, especially since this seat had remained vacant in previous announcements, raising expectations that the party was keeping it open for him. However, those rumors ended today.
On Thursday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir officially announced 36 new candidates at a press conference held at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan. The newly released list shows that the party has nominated SM Jahangir Hossain for Dhaka-18, not Snigdho.

Snigdho, who joined BNP on November 4, had quickly become an active face in the party. From participating in political programs to engaging in grassroots campaigns, his presence had grown steadily. Many within the party believed his momentum and visibility increased his chances of receiving the nomination. The Dhaka-18 seat remaining unannounced earlier only fueled the speculation.
But the final list tells a different story, with his name missing from the candidates’ roster. Prior to this, on November 3, BNP had revealed the names of 237 candidates out of 300 constituencies. Of the 63 seats left open at that time, 36 have now been finalized with today’s announcement.
Snigdho also has a personal connection to the July Uprising of 2024. He is the twin brother of martyr Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, who was killed during the movement a factor that gave his political entry significant emotional resonance among supporters. Despite the anticipation, the latest candidate list confirms that the much-talked-about rumor surrounding his potential nomination for Dhaka-18 did not come true.
