Aamir Khan and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani are reportedly coming together again for the much-awaited sequel to their 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots. According to new reports, the original cast — Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi — will also return to continue the story from where it ended.
Biopic Project Put on Hold
Earlier this year, Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani announced a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke. The plan was to start shooting early next year, and Hirani along with Abhijat Joshi had been working on the script.
However, both Aamir and Hirani reportedly felt that the script still needed major improvements. Since they were not fully satisfied, they decided to pause the biopic project for now.

Script of 3 Idiots Chapter 2 Locked
Hirani has now shifted his focus to familiar and successful territory. Pinkvilla reports that the script of 3 Idiots Chapter 2 has been locked. All four main actors — Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi — will reprise their roles.
The sequel is set 15 years after the events of the first film’s climax. The characters are shown living their separate lives before reuniting again.
Recap of the Original Ending
3 Idiots ended with Pia (Kareena Kapoor), Farhan (R Madhavan), and Raju (Sharman Joshi) finally finding Rancho, who is revealed to be Phunshukh Wangdu, at a school in Leh, Ladakh.
Kareena and Aamir share a kiss in their emotional reunion before Rancho gets the “last laugh” over Chatur.
Will Other Characters Return?
It is still unknown whether other popular characters will return in the sequel. This includes:
- Chatur
- Boman Irani’s Virus
- Mona Singh’s Mona
- Javed Jaffrey’s Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad
The first film was written by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra under Vinod Chopra Films.
