A Life Dedicated to Humanity and Medicine

Performing 2,000 kidney transplants with one hand, without taking a single taka as surgeon’s fee—this is the extraordinary contribution of Professor Dr Kamrul Islam. Despite being a senior professor, he regularly sees patients for only Tk 400, and in many cases, does not charge any consultation fee at all.

For him, patient care is not just a profession—it is a form of worship.

2,000th Transplant Successfully Completed

On Tuesday (24 December), Dr Kamrul Islam successfully completed his 2,000th kidney transplant at the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKD) Hospital.

So far, almost half of all kidney transplants in Bangladesh have been performed under his leadership.

A Strong Medical Team and High Success Rate

Dr Kamrul Islam leads a 21-member medical team, including 11 doctors.
Since 2007, the team has completed 2,000 kidney transplants, achieving an impressive 96 percent success rate.

Currently, the hospital performs 25 to 28 kidney transplants per month.

Doctor’s Words: Healing as a Source of Strength

Dr Kamrul Islam explained his motivation in his own words:

“একটা মানুষ যখন ভালো হয়ে যায়, এই ভালো কাজ থেকে যে ভালো লাগা, এটা একটা বড় স্পৃহা আপনার পরবর্তী কাজটা করার জন্য।”

Translation: “When a person recovers, the joy that comes from that good deed becomes a powerful inspiration to do the next one.”

He added:

“সপ্তাহে ছয় দিনই ট্রান্সপ্ল্যান্ট করতে হচ্ছে। তারপরেও রোগীর এত চাপ…”

Translation: “We have to do transplants six days a week. Still, the number of patients is so high that sometimes 100 patients are waiting.”

Affordable Treatment Compared to Abroad

While kidney transplants abroad usually cost Tk 30–50 lakh, the total cost at Dr Kamrul Islam’s hospital is only Tk 2.10 lakh.

Even after surgery:

  • Follow-up visits are free
  • No diagnostic fees
  • Hospital food is provided free of cost to admitted patients

Philosophy of Life and Income

Dr Kamrul Islam shared his belief about money and service:

“আমার যে আয় হয়, সে আয়টাও আল্লাহ পাকের… এই পুরোটা আমার অর্থ নয়।”

Translation: “Whatever income I earn belongs to Allah. It is not entirely my money.”

He further said:

“ভিজিট দিয়েই যাবে, আর না দিতে পারলে নিলাম না।”

Translation: “If someone can pay the consultation fee, that’s fine. If they can’t, I don’t take it.”

Hospital Built with Personal Savings

In 2014, Dr Kamrul Islam established the CKD Hospital in Shyamoli, using his personal savings and support from friends.

The hospital employs more than 450 staff, and over 200 staff members receive residential facilities provided by him.
All staff and admitted patients receive three free meals a day.

Patients Speak About Their Trust

One patient said:

“কামরুল স্যার যদি এখানে না আসতেন, তাহলে আমি ভারতে চলে যেতাম।”

Translation: “If Sir Kamrul had not been here, I would have gone to India for treatment.”

Another patient shared:

“একদম ফ্রিতেই আমাদের দেখে দেয়, ফলোআপ।”

Tranlation: “He provides follow-up care completely free of cost.”

A third patient said:

“আমার কাছে মনে হয়েছে কামরুল স্যারের কাছে আস্থা পাওয়া যায়।”

Translation: “I feel a sense of trust with Dr Kamrul that I could not find even abroad.”

The Role of His Mother

Behind Dr Kamrul Islam’s humanitarian journey stands his mother, Professor Rahima Khatun. She lost her husband during the 1971 Liberation War and single-handedly educated all four of her children from school to university.

Speaking proudly about her son, she said:

“আল্লাহ ওর হায়াতকে বৃদ্ধি করুন শুধু মানুষের উপকারের জন্য।”

Translation: “May Allah grant him a long life solely for the benefit of humanity.”
