Earlier in the day, Tarique Rahman left his residence in Gulshan around 10:45 a.m. According to a post from BNP’s verified Facebook page, the visit was part of his scheduled program to pay respects at Osman Hadi’s grave.
Unlike the previous two days, he traveled to Dhaka University in a white vehicle decorated with flowers, instead of the red-and-green themed bus. BNP leaders and activists were seen lining both sides of the road, while law enforcement personnel were deployed in significant numbers.
Security was tightened across the Dhaka University area in anticipation of his arrival. Two layers of barricades were set up from TSC to Hadi’s grave, and additional police checkpoints were placed in the Shahbag area.
Ahead of the visit, leaders and activists of Dhaka University Chhatra Dal gathered at the base of the Raju Sculpture, led by organization president Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos and general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon.
BNP’s media cell later announced that a planned visit to the rehabilitation hospital was canceled, as no injured individuals from the July mass uprising were currently admitted there. After completing the grave visit, Tarique Rahman was scheduled to go to the Election Commission office in Agargaon for national identity card registration.
It is worth noting that Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh last Thursday after 17 years in exile. His return drew massive crowds of BNP leaders, activists, and supporters, along with ordinary citizens. A large reception was held at the 300 Feet area in Purbachal, attended by party-nominated candidates from across the country.
