A shocking incident of alleged brutality by Jamaat–Shibir activists has surfaced in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj, where a young man was reportedly tortured after failing to pay extortion money.

The victim, Abu Sufian Siju (25), was tied to an electric pole and brutally assaulted for nearly one and a half hours. The incident took place on the evening of 24 December at Umarpur Ghat. He is currently undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Siju is the son of Rabiul Islam from Shyampur–Bajitpur village.

Eyewitness Accounts

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, several Jamaat–Shibir activists captured Siju, tied him to an electric pole, and repeatedly attacked him with sharp weapons. His hands and legs were slashed indiscriminately, and blows were inflicted on multiple parts of his body to ensure death.

Although local residents witnessed the incident from a distance, fear prevented them from intervening. Believing Siju to be dead, the attackers left the scene. Later, locals rescued him in critical condition and admitted him to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Victim’s Statement

While receiving treatment, Siju alleged that the attack was planned and deliberate.

He said:

“পরিকল্পিতভাবে আমাকে দেড় ঘণ্টা ধরে বৈদ্যুতিক খুঁটির সঙ্গে বেঁধে রেখে কুপিয়েছে জামায়াত-শিবিরের কর্মীরা।”

Translation: “Jamaat–Shibir activists planned the attack and hacked me for one and a half hours after tying me to an electric pole.”

He further named several alleged attackers, including Abdur Razzak, a poison shop owner, Anwar from Sharotnagar village, and Nur, brother of Abu Saeed, a poultry trader from Chama Bazar, along with several others.

Police Response

Officer-in-Charge of Shibganj Police Station Humayun Kabir confirmed that a case has been filed.

He said:

Translation: “A case has been filed in connection with the incident. Police have arrested two Jamaat–Shibir activists, and operations are ongoing to arrest the remaining accused.”
