A 24-year-old university student from Tripura, Angel Chakma, was beaten to death in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, after being subjected to racial abuse and violence by local youths who allegedly tagged him as “Chinese”.

Angel Chakma, a final-year MBA student at a private university in Dehradun, died on Friday (26 December) after remaining hospitalized for 17 days with critical injuries. His father, Tarun Chakma, a serving Border Security Force (BSF) jawan currently posted in Manipur, has demanded justice for his son.

Attack Following Racist Abuse

According to Tarun Chakma, the incident occurred on 9 December, when Angel and his brother Michael were visiting a local market. Six youths allegedly blocked their path and pushed Michael to the ground. When BSF Soldier’s Son Angel protested, the attackers surrounded him and hurled racist slurs, including: “Chinese momo”

Angel reportedly tried to explain that he was Indian, not Chinese, but the attackers ignored him. He was then assaulted with knives and heavy objects, resulting in severe injuries, including broken neck and spine.

Delay in Police Action Alleged

Angel’s father alleged that the police initially refused to register a case. An FIR was lodged only two to three days later, after pressure from the All-India Chakma Students Union and intervention by senior police officials.

Police Statement and Arrests

Dehradun police said the attack followed a verbal altercation, during which Angel was struck on the head and back using sharp weapons and blunt objects.

So far, five individuals have been arrested, while one suspect is believed to have fled to Nepal.

Broader Concerns

The killing has once again drawn attention to the ongoing racial discrimination and violence faced by people from India’s Northeast in other parts of the country, especially due to physical appearance and ethnic identity.
