On Wednesday, drivers of battery-powered rickshaws protested at the Doyaganj intersection in Jatrabari, Dhaka, demanding permission to drive on main roads. The protest caused severe traffic jams and led to a clash with the police, leaving two officers injured.
The protest began around noon, with drivers blocking the road and refusing to move despite requests from the police. According to Jatrabari police station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md Faruk Ahmed, the situation escalated when the protesters attacked the officers.
“To reduce the heavy traffic congestion, we asked them to clear the road, but they became violent. Two officers were injured and are now receiving medical treatment,” said OC Faruk.
Additional police forces were sent to the area to restore order.
This protest happened a day after the High Court banned battery-powered rickshaws in Dhaka. The court directed authorities to stop their operations within three days, citing safety concerns.
