A Nightmare for Travel Enthusiasts: Is Saint Martin’s Island Now Off-Limits?

In a significant move to preserve the natural beauty of Saint Martin’s Island, the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has introduced comprehensive new regulations for tourists. As per a notification issued on November 19, visitors will now be required to travel on authorized ships departing from designated entry points to ensure safety and control.

A key highlight of these regulations is the strict prohibition on carrying banned polythene bags and single-use plastic items, as per a list approved by the Ministry. This initiative is part of a larger effort to protect the island’s fragile ecosystem and maintain its pristine charm. Additionally, to improve transparency, a detailed register will be maintained for the hotels where tourists stay, enhancing monitoring and ensuring responsible tourism.

To regulate the increasing number of visitors, the Ministry has formed a joint committee to oversee the departure points for ships traveling to the island. This strategic step aims to balance tourism with conservation, safeguarding Saint Martin’s remarkable environment for future generations.

Nizam Uddin Ahmed, Additional District Magistrate of Cox’s Bazar, confirmed the new guidelines, emphasizing the importance of these measures in managing the island’s tourism sustainably.
