Lawyer Saiful Islam was killed in a brutal attack on Tuesday afternoon at Chittagong Court. Doctors at Chittagong Medical College (CMC) declared him dead at 5 PM after he was seriously injured in a clash involving followers of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
The incident unfolded around 3:45 PM when ISKCON followers clashed with local establishments in the court area. Saiful Islam, who was serving as an Assistant Public Prosecutor at the Chittagong Court, attempted to intervene but was abducted by the attackers. He was taken to the front of Rangma Tower, opposite the court gate, where he was hacked with machetes.
Saiful Islam, originally from Lohagara, Chittagong, was rushed to CMC Hospital but could not be saved. His death has shocked the local legal community, with several colleagues holding protests in his honor.
Earlier in the day, Chimmoy Krishna Das, a controversial ISKCON figure, was arrested in connection with the violence. He was presented in court and remanded to jail after his bail plea was rejected. His followers staged protests in the court area, blocking the prison van and clashing with police, leading to widespread unrest.
Authorities have increased security around the court as the situation remains tense. Police are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence.
