Supreme Court Grants Temporary Permission, Allowing Battery Rickshaws to Operate in Dhaka

The Supreme Court’s Chamber Court has temporarily paused the High Court’s order to stop battery-run rickshaws in Dhaka, allowing them to operate for the next month.

The government appealed the High Court’s directive, prompting the Supreme Court to issue this temporary decision. The Chamber Court also instructed authorities to resolve the High Court’s rule within the one-month timeframe.

Battery-run rickshaws are a popular and affordable transport option in Dhaka, with thousands relying on them for daily commutes and livelihoods. However, concerns about safety, traffic congestion, and unregulated operations have fueled debates. The High Court’s earlier ban aimed to address these issues, including reports of accidents and questions over licensing and compliance.

This temporary ruling offers relief to rickshaw operators and passengers while giving authorities time to find a balanced solution. Stakeholders, including transport regulators and local authorities, must act quickly to address these concerns.
