New Banknotes, New Identity: Bangladesh Moves Away from Mujib’s Image

Bangladesh is set to introduce new banknotes without the image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman within the next six months. These notes will feature designs showing religious landmarks, Bengali heritage, and artwork inspired by the July Revolution. The new notes will include 20, 100, 500, and 1,000 Taka denominations.

The government and Bangladesh Bank have approved the change. Printing will start once the tender process is completed. Officials expect the new notes to be available in the market soon.

For now, only these four types of notes will have the new design, but other denominations may follow later. The Finance Ministry has asked Bangladesh Bank to submit detailed design ideas.

The final designs will be decided by the Currency and Design Advisory Committee, which includes central bank officials and artists.

This change is a big step, as Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s image has been on Bangladesh’s currency for years. The government says the new designs will reflect the country’s culture and history. More updates are expected after the tender process is done.
