Next National Election Likely Between Late 2025 and Mid-2026: Prof. Yunus

Bangladesh’s interim government Chief Advisor, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has announced that the next general election could take place between late 2025 and mid-2026. Speaking on Victory Day, he stated that a National Consensus Commission, under his leadership, will begin working next month to build agreement on election-related reforms.
Prof. Yunus emphasized the importance of completing major reforms but noted that, if necessary, the election might proceed with minimal reforms and a finalized voter list by the end of 2025. If additional reforms are implemented, the timeline could extend by six months.
This is the first time the Chief Advisor has hinted at an election timeframe. Major political parties, including the BNP, have been demanding a clear election schedule. BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman recently questioned the time needed for reforms, while secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stressed the urgency of a credible election.
The announcement follows earlier remarks by the Army Chief, who suggested an 18-month timeline for elections, sparking political debate. Prof. Yunus confirmed that the Election Commission has been formed and has begun preparations for the polls.

Professor Yunus to Lead National Consensus Commission for Electoral Reforms

In a historic move towards political and electoral reforms in Bangladesh, Professor Muhammad Yunus has been appointed to lead the newly-formed  “National Consensus Building Commission”. This development follows the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5 and the subsequent swearing-in of the interim government under Professor Yunus on August 8.  The interim administration has been proactive in addressing  national challenges, with six reform commissions working on key sectors. In addition, a White Paper Committee tasked with analyzing the country’s economic status has already presented its findings. The Chief Advisor announced that these reform commissions would submit their final reports shortly. “The establishment of the National Consensus Commission is a step towards fostering dialogue among political parties and various stakeholders. This commission aims to identify critical areas of consensus and propose actionable recommendations,” said Professor Yunus during his national address on Monday. The commission will also include Professor Ali Riaz as its vice-chairperson, with the flexibility to co-opt additional members if necessary. The body’s initial focus will be on achieving consensus on election-related issues, such as determining the appropriate timeline for holding elections.

Professor Yunus expressed optimism that the commission would commence its work next month, pending the submission of reports from the six reform commissions. “The first task will be to facilitate swift decision-making on matters essential for conducting free and fair elections,” he emphasized.

This initiative marks a critical juncture for Bangladesh as the nation aims to establish political stability and ensure a smooth democratic transition through collective decision-making.
