Two people died in violent clashes between rival factions vying for control of the Ijtema ground in Tongi, Bangladesh. The conflict arose between followers of Maulana Zubair and Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, both prominent religious figures.
The incident unfolded early Wednesday morning as followers of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi attempted to enter the ground for a planned five-day congregation. This move was met with resistance from followers of Maulana Zubair, who had already occupied the site.
The ensuing clashes resulted in injuries to dozens and, tragically, the deaths of two individuals. The deceased include Md Amirul Islam Bacchu, 70, and Taijul Islam.
Both sides presented conflicting accounts of the events. While followers of Maulana Zubair alleged a surprise attack, supporters of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi claimed they were merely exercising their right to access the ground and were met with aggression first.
Local authorities are investigating the incident and have deployed police to maintain order at the Ijtema ground.
