Bangladesh’s Bold Evolution Earns The Economist’s ‘Country of the Year’ 2024

The Economist has named Bangladesh as the “Country of the Year” for 2024, recognizing its big political changes and progress. This award is given to the country that has improved the most in the past year, emphasizing improvements in governance and reform rather than wealth or happiness.

Bangladesh beat Syria, Argentina, South Africa, and Poland to win this title. The turning point was the removal of Sheikh Hasina in August after massive protests led by students. She ruled for 15 years, and while her leadership brought economic growth at first, later years were marked by election fraud, corruption, and suppression of opponents.

Now, an interim government led by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus is running the country. Supported by students, the military, businesses, and civil society, this government has brought back stability and improved the economy. However, there are still challenges, like fixing relations with India, holding fair elections, and ensuring justice is done fairly.

Syria came in second place for removing Bashar al-Assad, while Argentina, South Africa, and Poland were praised for their reforms.

The Economist said Bangladesh has taken bold steps toward democracy and reform, giving hope for a brighter and freer future.
