5th-Grade Bengali Textbook Update Highlights July Uprising Heroes, but Issues Arise

According to sources from NCTB, six new essays, poems, and rhymes have been added to the 5th-grade Bengali textbook. One of the notable additions is the essay titled ‘We Will Not Forget You,’ which commemorates the martyrs of the July Uprising.

The essay includes images of martyrs Abu Sayed and Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mughdho and honors all the martyrs of the uprising. It recalls the sacrifices of various martyrs, starting with the legendary Titu Mir, who fought against the British nearly 200 years ago, and continues to include those who sacrificed their lives in the July Uprising this year.

NCTB Chairman Professor A.K.M. Riajul Hasan told Prothom Alo that, “After the July revolution, there was a public demand to include subjects like the uprising’s graffiti in the textbooks. This year, instead of the history books, these topics have been included in the Bengali and English textbooks.”

However, there have been allegations that the information in the book may not be entirely accurate. Many educators and parents have raised concerns about the incorrect representation of the martyrs’ contributions and the misrepresentation of their names.

While the changes are seen as a step toward instilling the values of history and patriotism in future generations, there are calls for the relevant authorities to correct the errors in the book to ensure accurate information.
