Canada’s Immigration Policy: Discontinuing Permanent Residency Sponsorship for Parents and Grandparents

Canada has announced, from 2025 the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) through which permanent residents (PR) were sponsoring their parents, grandparents, and relatives would no longer be available. If You Like it, Then You Better Put a Track on It – Canada’s Immigration Department (IRCC) Announcement

The PGP will close to new applications by 2025. But applications submitted in 2024 will still be processed. Here’s what you need to know about the Super Visa: For families that want to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada. This visa, which allows relatives to live in Canada for up to five years, does not provide for permanent residency.

So does Canada, which is also set to scale back the number of people it hands out PR to by 20% in 2025. In better years, 500,000 individuals earned permanent residency status each year, but by 2025, it was set at 395,000.

The Immigration Department in Canada has been battling a backlog of applications. It intends to concentrate on managing 15,000 PGP applications submitted in 2024. Aimed at clearing the backlog and reducing waiting time.

Over 100,000 Bangladeshi migrants are expected to be affected by the change in the policy, who live in Canada. A lot of contestants rely on PGP to call their family members to join them.

Prosanjit Das Joy, a Bangladeshi citizen who had spent five years working in Canada, said,

“It’s becoming more difficult to obtain PR. Many Bangladeshis without PR are anxious for their future.”

Salahuddin Bachchu, a businessman in Canada, is quoted as saying” In the early days of my time in Canada, I could bring my wife-and children, and parents at my own expense. This situation has gotten much worse over time.

This new rule will make reunification for families more difficult in Canada. An option for families is the Super Visa, though it is a temporary fix, as it doesn’t lead to permanent residency.
