Bangladesh’s unemployment problem is growing, and the latest numbers paint a worrying picture. In just one year, the number of unemployed people has increased by 1.7 lakh, bringing the total to 26.6 lakh by September 2024, according to a recent report from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
People across all sectors are losing jobs. What’s even more alarming is the drop in the country’s overall labour force by 19.5 lakh. Even worse, youth participation has fallen by 21.7 lakh, signaling that many young people are either giving up on looking for work or struggling to find opportunities that fit their skills.
The economy is facing challenges, both globally and at home. Job markets are changing, industries are struggling, and many young people aren’t getting the training they need for today’s job. Many people are losing hope. When the younger generation starts stepping away from the workforce, it’s a sign that the system is failing them.
This rise in unemployment is concerning. The government needs to focus on creating jobs and providing better training programs for young people. Businesses need to invest in areas where jobs are most needed. And society as a whole must find ways to support those who are struggling. Bangladesh must act now to rebuild confidence in its workforce, especially among its youth. If not, the consequences will go far beyond today’s numbers, impacting the country’s future for years to come.
