Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) men have reclaimed almost 5-kilometre of the Kodla River along the Matila border in Maheshpur, Jhenidah years after the river was inaccessible to Bangladeshis under restriction from India’s Border Security Force (BSF). This was announced by the 58th BGB Battalion during a news conference on Monday, January 6.
Lieutenant Colonel Azizus Shahid, the Commanding Officer of the 58th BGB, said: “This 4.8-kilometer stretch of the Kodla River has always been a part of Bangladesh’s territory. But our locals were not allowed to use it for fishing or any other daily work due to interference from the BSF.” Following vigorous negotiations, we’ve taken back control, and now residents have access to and can use the river freely.”
It was an exciting, relief-filled news to the people of Matila village who have long been prevented from accessing the river. Some fished while others bath in the reclaimed water; Many gathered beside the riverbank.
Alomgir, a farmer from the area, was ecstatic: “Before we couldn’t even think of using the river. BSF kept us away from it.” Now we can fish, bathe and carry out our daily chores without fear.”
However, this victory is a big achievement for BGB to stand by the side to protect the borders of the country and to secure the rights of the citizens.
