Bangladesh Implements Ban on E-Cigarette Imports: Addressing Health Concerns

The government has banned the import of e-cigarettes and related products under the Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS). The Ministry of Commerce updated the Import Policy Order 2021–2024 on December 31, 2024, adding e-cigarettes to the list of prohibited items. The decision was officially announced on January 1, 2025.

The ban was approved earlier during the Advisory Council meeting on December 12, 2024, chaired by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The Health Services Division under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare proposed the ban to protect public health and ensure the safety of future generations.

E-cigarettes, often seen as a safer alternative to smoking, contain nicotine, which is addictive and can negatively affect brain development, especially in young people. The chemicals in e-cigarette aerosols can damage lung tissue and increase the risk of respiratory diseases, while nicotine also raises heart rate and blood pressure, contributing to cardiovascular risks. This decision marks a crucial step in restricting harmful nicotine products and ensures the safety of public health.
