Bangladesh is recording a historic wheat import this year, importing a total of 7.3 million tons of wheat till now, which is a 34 percent increase from the previous year. This increase is a sign of the evolving eating preferences of Bangladeshi people as well as a growing appetite for wheat-based foods, which are now routine.
With the rising popularity of wheat-based foods in urban areas, this demand has been on the rise. Wheat-based dishes have become a regular feature of daily meal at lunches and dinners in Bangladesh, complementing a rice-based menu.
Russia is a major supplier to Bangladesh, accounting for half of the country’s wheat imports. By now, wheat imports cover 85% Bangladesh’s domestic demand that is very important for the economy and food section of the country. This growing import is crucial for not just fulfilling domestic needs but also for Bangladesh’s larger trade transactions.
The wheat imports emphasize a shift among Bangladeshi eaters, with an increasing number of wheat-based items incorporated into the diet of the country, historically associated with rice dishes.
