Bangladesh has witnessed a remarkable increase in wheat imports, with the country importing a record 7.3 million tons in 2024, marking a 34% rise compared to the previous year. This surge reflects the changing food habits of the Bangladeshi population and the growing demand for wheat-based products, which have become an integral part of the diet.
As the popularity of wheat-based foods grows, particularly in urban areas, the demand for these products continues to rise. Wheat-based dishes are now a regular feature of daily meals in Bangladesh, supplementing the traditional rice-based cuisine.
Half of Bangladesh’s wheat imports come from Russia, making it a major supplier to the country. Currently, wheat imports meet 85% of Bangladesh’s domestic demand, playing a crucial role in the nation’s economy and food sector. This increased import is vital not only for meeting domestic needs but also for contributing to Bangladesh’s wider trade activities.
The rise in wheat imports highlights the shift in Bangladesh’s culinary preferences, as the nation incorporates more wheat-based foods into its diet alongside traditional rice dishes.
