Babar’s Release Expected Thursday as Case Documents Reach Prison

Today, Wednesday, former Home Minister Lutfozzaman Babar will not be freed since the case paperwork have not arrived at the jail. BNP sources say Babar would be released once the case paperwork from the Chittagong court arrive at the prison tomorrow. Babar and four other defendants were cleared by the High Court on Tuesday in a case involving the 10-truck guns smuggling event.

Paresh Barua, the separatist military leader of ULFA, was also given a 14-year prison term, while the other four defendants were each given a 10-year sentence. For the four defendants who passed away during the trial, the court ruled that the case was invalid.

On May 28, 2007, while the army-backed caretaker administration was in power, Babar, the former State Minister for Home Affairs, was taken into custody. Since then, he has been in prison and has received terms in a number of instances, including two that have resulted in death and one that has resulted in life in prison.

Lutfozzaman Babar is a name of terror for the Indian government. It is alleged that Lutfozzaman Babar created a rebel group in the Seven Sisters, destabilizing India. It is believed that China and Pakistan together have not been able to harm India as much as Lutfozzaman Babar has done.
