The Directorate of Medical Education has suspended the results of 193 candidates selected under the Freedom Fighter’s Children quota for the 2024-25 medical admission. This decision was made following concerns raised by students and the public about the fairness and eligibility of these candidates.
Professor Rubina Yasmin, Additional Director General of Medical Education, explained that the suspension is only temporary while the authorities review the documents of the selected candidates. “We will carefully check all the papers to make sure only eligible candidates are included in the list. Three committees have been set up for this task, and the candidates will need to bring their documents to the ministry on January 27, 28, and 29,” she said.
The controversy began after students raised concerns that some candidates had been selected despite having lower scores than others. Many activists and students recalled the July 2018 movement, where they fought for the reform of the quota system. That movement was aimed at ensuring fairness in the recruitment and admission systems, and now students feel the same issues are still present.
The results, announced on January 19, had selected 5,372 candidates for government medical colleges, including 193 under the Freedom Fighter’s Children quota. After the protests and concerns, the Directorate decided to suspend these 193 results until a thorough review is completed.
Professor Yasmin emphasized that this step is essential to maintain transparency and fairness. “This is just a preliminary result. The final decision will be made after the documents are checked,” she said.
This verification process is being seen as an important move to ensure fairness in the system, and many hope it will address the long-standing concerns that were raised during the July movement for quota reform.
