India’s Tata Motors is set to start a pilot project

Tata is ready to set the trucks on roads, fitted with hydrogen internal combustion (IC) engines.

The test drive will be running in partnership with IOCL, India’s national oil company. As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the company will set off the trucks on three routes for up to 18 months.

The three routes will be Mumbai to Pune, Jamshedpur to Kalinganagar, and Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

The goal is to inspect the commercial possibility of hydrogen internal combustion engines and refuelling infrastructure in India, said a senior Tata Motors executive.

The company also expects overall commercial vehicle (CV) sales to recover in the financial year 2026.

In the recently concluded Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi, Tata Motors opened up its creative hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle, the Tata Prima H.28.

This is considered a major leap in the hydrogen-powered vehicle segment and is India’s first commercial vehicle featuring a state-of-the-art four-cylinder H2ICE engine, with a range of 550 kilometres.

Tata Motors is the first OEM to get this hydrogen pilot allotment from the government. These hydrogen vehicles will set out on three routes in India during this quarter,” said Girish Wagh, Executive Director, Tata Motors.

He is also heading the commercial vehicles division. According to the plan, a total of 15 vehicles will be deployed across the three routes.
