Bangladesh to Build its First Green Data Centre with Support from ADB

With support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Bangladesh is planning to construct its first green data center. To create the facility under a public-private partnership (PPP) paradigm, the ADB, the Posts and Telecommunications Division, Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL), and the Public-Private Partnership Authority (PPPA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday.

The innovative data center will be situated on a property owned by BTCL close to Chattogram and constructed in accordance with international standards, guaranteeing scalability and high availability. It will handle BTCL’s internal data storage needs while offering commercial colocation services to both public and private businesses, all while being powered by renewable energy.

“This initiative marks a significant step toward achieving Bangladesh’s digital vision, integrating cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices to support the country’s digital transformation,” said ADB Country Director Hoe Yun Jeong, highlighting the project’s importance. It is anticipated that the initiative will draw private investment to the IT industry, promoting technological advancement and capital mobilization.

Soon, a transaction advisory services (TAS) agreement will be signed to direct the project’s execution, including stakeholder capacity building, project structure, feasibility assessments, and tendering. This partnership demonstrates Bangladesh’s dedication to digital innovation and sustainable development.

In order to create an atmosphere that is favorable to private investment in the IT industry, ADB’s TAS support will encompass feasibility assessment, project structure, tendering, and stakeholder capacity building.
