The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against NASSA Group Chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder for ostensibly receiving illegal resources worth more than Tk781.31 crore.
Today (16 February), the case was lodged by ACC Assistant Director Mohammad Shahjahan Miraj at the ACC’s Integrated District Office, Dhaka-1, confirmed ACC Director General Md Akhtar Hossain. Based on Akhtar, the total amount is Tk 781,312,2454.
The charges against Nazrul have been delivered under Section 27(1) of the ACC Act 2004 and Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1947.Last year, on 01 October, he was also a former chairman of the Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) and was arrested. Meanwhile, he was alleged in multiple cases.
In 1990, the NASSA Group’s founder was Nazmul; around 17 years later, he managed the BAB. Since 2008, the Awami League-led government has. Also, he was a former chairman of EXIM Bank.
In August 2024, after the Awami League government falls by the students, on 29 August, the central bank removes him and his wife, Nasreen Islam, from the bank’s board. On 25 August, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit had ordered all banks to freeze all accounts of Nazrul and his wife.
However, he was arrested, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) also debuted an investigation against Nazrul on allegations of laundering nearly $3 million, or some Tk35 crore, to the United States under the pretext of export. On October 02, based on CID statement Nazrul is trade-based money releasing through using Firoza Garments Ltd, a concernment of Nassa group.
Between March 2020 and 2024, Firoza Garments exported goods to the US under 130 LCs/sales covenants opened with National Bank Ltd. Through the investigation, the CID has exposed that the company did not return $3 million in export systems for the goods within the specified time and the money that was launched to the US.
