World First Aussie Man to Leave Hospital with Artificial Heart

One of the remarkable inventions in medical science is Artificial heart. The world’s first person to be released from a hospital with a completely artificial heart is an Australian patient. In November a 40 years old man from New South Wales underwent a six hour procedure at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney to have the implant placed. Before being released last month he was in the intensive care unit for a few weeks, followed by additional observation in a normal hospital.

The med-tech business BiVACOR is the manufacturer of the titanium artificial heart, which is intended to keep patients alive until the heart of an organ donor becomes available. Early in March the patient received a donor heart transplant. It’s the longest period of time a person has had between receiving a heart transplant and an artificial heart.

A pump is used by the gadget to maintain vital cardiac processes. Dr. Daniel Timms the developer of the device who was born in Queensland, expressed his pride in the advancement of technology. “Being able to bring Australia along this journey and be part of the first clinical trials is immensely important to me and something that I set out to do from the very beginning,” Timms stated. “The entire BiVACOR team is deeply grateful to the patient and his family for placing their trust in our Total Artificial Heart.” Many more patients will be able to get this life-saving technology thanks to their bravery.

Being involved in the procedure was a privilege according to Dr. Paul Jansz of St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. “Heart failure kills almost 5,000 Australians every year,” he stated. “We’ve worked towards this moment for years and we’re enormously proud to have been the first team in Australia to carry out this procedure.”
