A major controversy has erupted over the Matarbari Power Plant coal shipment as authorities discovered excessive soil mixed with the imported coal.

The consignment was discovered to contain low-grade, soil-mixed coal from an Indian vendor, despite the initial contract being for high-quality Indonesian coal. As a result, unloading has been immediately stopped, and the ship has been moved to the outside anchorage. There will be a high-level government meeting on March 23 as a result of the issue’s considerable concern. The Matarbari Coal Power Project’s Executive Director attested to the fact that they had formally rejected the shipment and informed the supplier.

The MV Orient Orchid, a Singapore-flagged vessel, arrived on March 17 with 63,000 tons of coal worth approximately Tk 1,000 crore. However, as unloading began, authorities found more soil than coal, repeatedly causing conveyor belt failures. Despite efforts, only 22,350 tons could be unloaded before operations were suspended. This coal quality scandal raises serious questions about supplier accountability and power plant fuel standards in Bangladesh.

The Matarbari Power Plant coal shipment has sparked controversy as authorities discovered excessive soil mixed with the coal, leading to the suspension of unloading operations. Following discussions with senior officials, the vessel carrying 40,650 tons of coal was sent to the outer anchorage. Meghna Group’s Deputy General Manager (Shipping Operations), Ujjal Kanti Barua, declined to comment, stating that discussions are ongoing and the port authorities are handling the issue.

Port officials verified that the shipment’s high soil content was the cause of the conveyor belt’s frequent malfunctions. During unloading, more soil than coal was discovered, according to a source. According to the shipping company’s instructions, the ship was transferred to the outside anchorage, as confirmed by Dock Master Captain Abu Sufian. The integrity of the coal supply chain and coal quality in Bangladesh’s energy sector are seriously called into question by this incident.

Speaking with the concerned authorities revealed that this coal is not suitable for power generation. Due to the excessive soil content, the conveyor belt kept malfunctioning during unloading. After consulting with senior officials, the unloading operation was halted, and the vessel was sent outside the port channel.
