A Bangladeshi Young Man Dies While Fighting in Russia-Ukraine War

Young Man

A young man named Akram Hossain, aged 25, from Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh, has died while fighting in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. He was fighting on the side of the Russian army. His family received the sad news on Friday, April 18.

From a Small Village to a Distant Land

Akram was the eldest among five siblings. He was from Hossenpur village, under Lalpur Union in Ashuganj upazila. His father’s name is Morshed Miah. Akram’s family was not financially stable. To support his family, he went to Russia almost a year ago, hoping to earn a better income.

At first, he worked in a Chinese company in Russia. But the salary was very low and not enough to support his family. Later, some agents or brokers convinced him to join the Russian military on a contract basis to fight in the war against Ukraine. He agreed and joined the army about two and a half months ago.

He even uploaded a photo of himself wearing a military uniform on his Facebook profile, showing that he had become a soldier in the war.

Mother’s Tears: “I Want My Son’s Body”

Akram’s mother, Mobina Begum, said that the family did not want him to join the war. They told him not to go. But Akram said that he had no way to come back home anymore. He used to talk to his family regularly. However, since April 13, the family could not contact him.

Mobina Begum said with pain in her voice,

“Yesterday, one of Akram’s fellow soldiers called and told us that Akram was killed in a missile attack in Ukraine. I only want my son’s dead body to be returned to us.”

Father’s Grief: “He Was Our Only Hope”

Akram’s father, Morshed Miah, said that the last time he talked to his son was on Sunday, April 13. Akram told him that the situation in the war zone was very bad. He also said that it was impossible for him to return to Bangladesh.

“He was our main earner. Now that he is gone, we don’t know how we will live,” said the father, filled with sorrow and confusion.

Local Government’s Response

When asked about this incident, Ashuganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Rafe Mohammad Sora, said,

“We heard about the death of a young man from Ashuganj in Russia through local people. We will contact the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment to try to bring his dead body back to Bangladesh.”
