Sarjis- “Bangladesh Loses Hope If BNP Only Talks About Elections”

Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer of the Northern region for the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), has said that people have high expectations from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He expressed this view in a verified Facebook status posted on Friday, May 23.

In his post, Sarjis Alam referred to a recent statement by BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed who said that “The only solution to the ongoing crisis is to propose an electoral roadmap.”

Sarjis responded by saying that BNP is currently the largest political party in Bangladesh, and as such, the hopes of the people and the nation are pinned heavily on them. This also places a significant responsibility on the party’s shoulders.

He continued by expressing disappointment: “When elections are presented as the only path forward, it deeply disheartens those who participated in the July uprising, the families of those who were martyred, the wounded fighters, and the millions who took to the streets on August 5, risking everything for a greater cause. Their dreams begin to fade.”

Calling directly upon Salahuddin Ahmed and the BNP leadership, Sarjis Alam urged the party to broaden its vision. He wrote, “Along with an electoral roadmap, we demand a roadmap for justice for the massacres, a roadmap for fundamental reforms in the country and a roadmap for the trial of the July massacre’s mastermind killer Hasina.”

He concluded with a strong message: “If, after such a massive public uprising, a major party like BNP chooses to focus solely on elections and ignores the broader struggle for justice and change, then we along with the people of Bangladesh will be left disappointed.”
