The Government Hike Wage for Laborers: Bold Initiative for Temporary Workers from July 1

the Government hike wages

The government has officially increased the daily wages for temporary laborers employed in various government departments. Starting July 1, the maximum daily wage for a day laborer will be raised to Tk 800, a significant increase from the previous range of Tk 575 to Tk 600. This decision was formalized through a circular issued on Thursday, May 22, by the Regulations Division of the Ministry of Finance.

According to the circular, the new wage rates have been fixed under the newly adopted “Temporary Daily Labor Employment Policy 2025”, applicable to laborers working on a short-term basis across ministries, departments, agencies, state-owned entities, and autonomous bodies.

Revised The Government Wage Rates Across Different Regions
  • Dhaka and Chattogram City Corporations:
The daily wage has been raised to Tk 800. Previously, skilled workers in these areas earned Tk 600, while unskilled workers earned Tk 575.
  • Divisional Cities and Other City Corporations:
The new wage is set at Tk 750 per day, up from the earlier rate of Tk 550 to Tk 600. This marks an increase of Tk 150 to Tk 200.
  • District and Upazila Levels:
Workers in these areas will now receive Tk 700 per day. Skilled laborers previously earned Tk 550, while unskilled ones received Tk 500. This too reflects a wage increase of Tk 150 to Tk 200.

Conditions for Hiring and Wage Payment

The circular also lays out a number of conditions to ensure accountability and transparency:

  • All hiring must strictly follow the guidelines set by the “Temporary Daily Labor Employment Policy 2025”, which includes appropriate wage payment and maintaining a proper working environment.
  • The number of laborers hired must receive prior approval from the relevant authorities.
  • Wages must be paid from the budget allocations granted to the respective ministries or organizations.
  • Monthly contracts are not permitted under these wage rates. This pay scale applies strictly to daily employment only.
  • In case of any irregularities or violations, the authority responsible for wage disbursement will be held accountable, and all financial rules must be meticulously followed.
A Step Forward for Worker Welfare

This move is expected to improve the livelihood of thousands of temporary government workers across the country. With inflation and cost of living on the rise, the wage adjustment aims to offer some relief to day laborers, especially those working in public service tasks like infrastructure maintenance, cleanliness, and emergency operations.

By introducing clear policies and wage structures, the government also aims to reduce exploitation, ensure fair compensation, and promote better working conditions.

This wage revision reflects a broader effort by the government to recognize the crucial contribution of daily laborers in national development and to provide them with the dignity and compensation they deserve.
