Bangladesh Submits Ratification Document for UN BBNJ Agreement

Bangladesh has submitted its instrument of ratification to the United Nations ‘Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction’ (BBNJ) Convention on protection of the oceans and exploitation and fair use of deep sea resources.

Adviser on foreign affairs. Tauhid Hussain submitted the document at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) high-level agreement event held in New York on Thursday.

The approval reinforces Bangladesh’s unwavering commitment to international cooperation and regulatory initiatives in maritime affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release.

The press release also said that as an early ratifier, Bangladesh is always committed to the universal and effective implementation of the BBNJ Agreement to pave the way for its implementation.

With the deposit of ratification documents, Bangladesh has now joined the group of pioneer countries that have ratified this important treaty, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Incidentally, the UN unanimously adopted the ‘Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction’ (BBNJ) Convention on 19 June 2023, which is a landmark achievement in the management of the global commons.

The Convention strengthens the international legal framework for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in marine areas beyond national jurisdiction.

The agreement emphasizes transparent environmental impact assessments and supports capacity-building efforts of developing countries by ensuring equitable participation in the sustainable management of marine resources.

It is to be noted that the BBNJ Agreement enters into force within 120 days of the 60 member states submitting their instruments of ratification, approval, acceptance or accession.
