Adani Power and Torrent Power New Project Plan

Two of India’s leading private power companies, Adani Power and Torrent Power, have bagged major contracts to establish a cumulative 2,400 megawatt (MW) coal power capacity in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. Both companies confirmed the development in separate statements.

Torrent Power’s 1,600 MW Project

The MP Power Management Company has awarded a contract to Torrent Power to supply 1,600 MW of electricity. This will come from a newly established coal-based power plant, requiring an investment of around ₹220 billion ($2.51 billion), the company announced.

Adani Power’s 800 MW Project

On the other hand, Adani Power will supply electricity from a new 800 MW thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh. This project involves an investment of ₹105 billion ($1.20 billion). The company also noted that this is its fourth major power supply order in the past 12 months, highlighting its growing role in India’s energy sector.

India’s Coal Power Expansion Strategy

These projects are aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government’s vision to strengthen India’s energy security. The government aims to raise coal-based power capacity by 80 gigawatts (GW), taking the total to more than 290 GW by 2032. This expansion, an increase of over one-third, is designed to ensure a reliable, round-the-clock power supply across the country.
