Expulsion Decision Announced
Dhaka University (DU) has expelled its student, Ali Hossain, for six months after he used offensive language and issued threats against a female student on social media.
The decision was confirmed in an official press release from the university’s Public Relations Office on Wednesday, September 3.

Identity of the Accused Student
Ali Hossain is a student of the Department of Sociology, enrolled in the 2020–21 academic year. He was also a resident of Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall at Dhaka University.
Probe Committee Recommendation
The decision to expel Ali Hossain came following recommendations from a Proctorial Inquiry Committee that was formed to investigate the incident.
According to the press release, this six-month expulsion is the highest punishment that falls under the authority of the Proctor as per the university’s rules. However, his punishment could be extended further, or he may even face permanent expulsion, depending on the committee’s future recommendations.
Case Sent to Sexual Harassment Committee
Along with the expulsion, the university authorities have also forwarded the complaint against Ali Hossain to the Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee for further action.
The Threat on Social Media
Ali Hossain gained attention after threatening a female candidate of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections with gang rape. The victim, B.M. Fahmida Alam was nominated by the left alliance as a candidate for the post of Secretary of Liberation War and Democratic Movements.
