The stabbing of Asaduzzaman Tuhin, a correspondent for the daily Pratidin, comes a day after another journalist was beaten with sticks and stones in Gazipur, amid a series of violent attacks on journalists. The incident prompted journalists to form a human chain in front of the Press Club, where they expressed concerns about the crisis in journalist safety and freedom.
There has been renewed concern over journalist safety in Gazipur. On Thursday night, Asaduzzaman Tuhin, the Gazipur correspondent of the Daily Pratidin Kagoj, was brutally hacked to death with his throat slit. The murder took place near Chandana Chowrasta. The incident came just a day earlier, on Wednesday evening, after Anwar Hossain Sohel, a journalist for the Daily Bangladesh Alor, was brutally beaten with sticks, bricks and stones in the Sadar area of Gazipur.

Journalists formed a human chain in front of the Press Club to protest the incident and demand justice for the murder of their colleague. While giving a speech at the human chain, popular journalist Ali Asgar Emon expressed his strong anger and said—
Translation: “Write it down, I told you—no more good journalists will be born in this country. I know that this human chain will not be of any use. However, I am standing in the Press Club in mourning for my colleague. If only the state would at least be kind and provide us with security. Now, just surviving is a big challenge.”
