A major controversy has erupted in Chattogram involving a senior leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Nizam Uddin, the General Secretary of the organization’s Chattogram metropolitan unit, has been temporarily suspended following serious allegations of extortion, assault, and abuse of organizational power.
On Saturday (July 5), a show-cause notice signed by the group’s Central Organizational Secretary, Moinul Islam, was issued against Nizam. The notice states that, under the direction of the central president Rashidul Islam and general secretary Hasan Inam, the organization is suspending Nizam Uddin from his post and demanding a written explanation within three working days.
According to the notice, Nizam has been allegedly involved in activities that go against the organization’s policies and discipline. “As a person holding a responsible position, such actions tarnish the image of the organization and violate its internal code of conduct,” the letter reads. If a satisfactory explanation is not submitted within the given time, the central committee reserves the right to take further action, including permanent expulsion.

The controversy arose after a woman named Riazul Jannat submitted a formal complaint to the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner, accusing Nizam Uddin of demanding Tk 2 crore from her husband, Nowshad Jamal—a Meghna Petroleum employee and reportedly linked with Jamaat-e-Islami. She alleged that when her husband refused to pay, Nizam orchestrated a false case and handed him over to police after a physical assault.
Nowshad Jamal was arrested last Thursday by Kotwali Police. The complaint, made public on Saturday morning, triggered widespread backlash on social media and sparked intense debate about the misuse of activist platforms for personal gain.
Following the public outcry, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement acted swiftly, issuing the suspension and show-cause notice. Nizam Uddin, when contacted, confirmed receiving the notice and stated, “I will send my written reply to the central committee within the due time.”
As the organization faces increasing scrutiny, many observers view this incident as a test of its internal accountability and commitment to ethical standards. The central committee’s next steps will likely set a precedent for how such allegations are handled within student movements in the country.
