Popular Bangladeshi rock band Artcell has been given a 12-hour ultimatum to pay Tk 14.5 lakh as compensation after cancelling their scheduled performance at Rajshahi University’s event “36 July: Festival of Freedom”. The organizers and students expressed anger and frustration, demanding a refund along with a public apology mentioning Rajshahi University’s name.
Concert Cancellation Creates Uproar
Artcell was scheduled to perform on 15 August at Rajshahi University’s cultural event “36 July: Festival of Freedom”. However, just one night before the show, the band announced on social media that the concert was cancelled due to unavoidable reasons.
This sudden decision shocked and angered both the event organizers and the students of Rajshahi University, who had been preparing for the program.
Ultimatum from the Chief Organizer
The chief organizer and former coordinator of the event, Salauddin Ammar, reacted strongly after the cancellation. He announced on Facebook that Artcell must refund the money and pay additional compensation within 12 hours.
He wrote on Facebook:
“কালচারাল ফ্যাসিস্ট লিংকন আর্টসেল আজকের মধ্যে আপনারা ডিসিশন জানাবেন, ক্ষতিপূরণসহ টাকা ফেরত পাঠাবেন এবং রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের নাম মেনশন করে ক্ষমা চাইবেন।”
Translation: “Cultural fascist Lincoln, Artcell — by today you must give your decision, refund the money with compensation, and publicly apologize mentioning Rajshahi University’s name.”

Tk 14.5 Lakh Compensation Demanded
In his post, Ammar also mentioned a detailed compensation list amounting to Tk 14.5 lakh. He warned that if the band fails to comply, legal action will be taken against them under specific laws.
He further added:
“এটা না দিলে কোন কোন আইনে মামলা হবে সেটার তালিকা আমরা প্রস্তুত করছি এবং আগামীর কানাডা সফর বাতিলের আওয়াজ তুলব আমরা। … তোমাদের টাকা নিয়ে ক্যাম্পাসে কুকুরগুলোকে খাওয়াবো। আর এটা চাঁদাবাজি হিসেবে সামনে আনলে আনো। তোমার কালচারাল ফ্যাসিজমের বিরুদ্ধে জিরো টলারেন্স। সময় মাত্র ১২ ঘণ্টা।”
Translation: “If this is not done, we are preparing a list of laws under which we will file cases and we will also raise our voice to cancel your upcoming Canada tour. … We will feed the campus dogs with your money. If you call this extortion in front of the media, go ahead. We have zero tolerance against your cultural fascism. The time is only 12 hours.”
Allegations of Student Politics Involvement
Ammar also alleged that Artcell cancelled the concert after replying to an email from the banned student organization Chhatra League. He accused the band of maintaining communication with them at the last moment.
He stated to The Daily Campus:
“আমরা সমস্ত আয়োজন, মঞ্চ, ডেকোরেশন প্রস্তুত করার পর হঠাৎ আর্টসেল ফেসবুকে ঘোষণা দেয় অনিবার্য কারণে তারা রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কনসার্টে আসছে না। এতে আমরা বড় ক্ষতির সম্মুখীন হয়েছি। তারা নিষিদ্ধ ছাত্রলীগের ই-মেইলের রিপ্লাই দিয়েছে, এর প্রমাণ আমাদের কাছে আছে, তাদের নিষিদ্ধ ছাত্রলীগের সঙ্গে যোগসাজশ আছে। এছাড়া আমরা তাদের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতারণা ও মানহানি মামলা করব।”
Translation: “After we prepared everything — the arrangements, stage, and decorations — suddenly Artcell announced on Facebook that they would not attend the Rajshahi University concert due to unavoidable reasons. This caused us huge losses. They replied to the email of the banned Chhatra League, and we have proof. They have connections with the banned Chhatra League. In addition, we will file fraud and defamation cases against them.”
