Attack on journalists at DRU: Two, including a woman, sent to jail

Violent Assault on Journalists Leads to Arrest and Imprisonment of Two Suspects Including a Woman . A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of Zakir Hossain (61) and his wife Beauty Khatun (48) in connection with a case involving an attack and attempted murder of journalists at the premises of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in Segunbagicha, the capital. 

On Sunday, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Khalek Mia of Shahbagh Police Station, presented them before the court and requested that they be kept in jail.
Following the plea, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam ordered that they be sent to jail.

Sub-Inspector Zinnat Ali from the prosecution division of Shahbagh Police Station’s court confirmed the matter. Earlier, around 6 PM on Saturday, Shahbagh police arrested the couple from their residence in the Segunbagicha area.

The attack occurred on Wednesday night when journalists at the Dhaka Reporters Unity were suddenly assaulted. Armed with pistols, local weapons, and sticks, a group of nearly 50 attackers  including Zakir Hossain, Beauty Khatun, Ador Akhtar, Uday Hasan, Hridoy, Antora, Imu, Rana, Kamal, and Ratan  stormed the premises.

During the incident, DRU President Abu Saleh Akon, Office Secretary Rafique Rafi, and members Moshiur Rahman, Mahbub Hasan, Delwar Mohin, and Mofizul Sadiq, among others, sustained injuries. Police and military forces eventually brought the situation under control. Later, on Thursday afternoon, DRU’s Admin Officer Sulaiman Hossain filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station naming 10 individuals and accusing another 50 unidentified attackers.
