Australia Enforces Law: Social Media Access for Teens Under 16 Banned

Australia has introduced a new law to stop children under 16 from using social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. These platforms must verify the ages of users to block underage access. Companies that fail to follow the rules could face fines of up to AUD 49.5 million.

The law avoids using government-issued IDs for age checks to protect privacy. Instead, platforms must develop alternative methods to confirm users’ ages. However, some platforms like YouTube and messaging apps are not included in the ban, which critics argue could limit its effectiveness.

This decision comes as experts warn about the harm social media causes to teenagers. Studies show that too much social media use increases the risk of anxiety, depression, and body image issues. Many teens are also exposed to cyberbullying, addictive features, and harmful content that can affect their mental health. The Australian government hopes this law will reduce these risks and make the internet a safer space for children.
