In a heart-wrenching turn of events, an auto-rickshaw driver from Manikdi Purangaon, under Bhairab Upazila’s Gozaria Union in Kishoreganj, found an unconventional way to express his anguish after his livelihood was disrupted by theft.
Hridoy Mia (25), a father of three and the breadwinner of a seven-member family, woke up to discover the battery of his rented auto-rickshaw missing on Saturday night (December 21). This incident left him unable to operate the vehicle, his sole source of income, plunging the family further into financial distress.
Hridoy took a risk because he couldn’t stand the burden of his situation. He hired a microphone and went around his neighbourhood on Monday, December 23, confronting the unidentified thief in a public outcry and expressing his concerns.
With the money I make from operating my leased autorickshaw, I hardly have enough to support my family. I’m powerless because of the battery theft. Without a job, I’m already having trouble making the 500 taka a day rent payment for the car. “This loss is devastating,” Hridoy stated in an emotional tone.
Local leaders and community members have acknowledged the severity of his plight. Milon Mia, General Secretary of Ward 6 BNP, shared, “We have advised him to file a general diary (GD) at the local police station, and efforts are underway to assist him in recovering the stolen battery.”
Ward 6 Union Parishad Member Manik Chan remarked, “While the theft is deeply unfortunate, addressing the matter through public outcry on a microphone is not socially acceptable. However, his actions reflect the desperation of a man in extreme distress.”
The incident has sparked discussions in the area about the challenges faced by low-income earners and the need for community support during such crises. Meanwhile, locals hope for a resolution that will allow Hridoy to return to work and provide for his family once again.
