The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) instructed that if drivers of gas- or petrol-powered auto rickshaws charge tariffs higher than what the meter reveals, they have taken legal actions against them.
Shitangshu Shekhor Biswas, Director (Engineering) of BRTA, on Monday (10 February), was shared this information by a signed letter. The letter was conveyed to the Police Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). In this statement he said, “In response to allegations about overwhelming tariffs beyond the government-set meter rate for gas or petrol-powered 4-stroke three-wheeler auto-rickshaws, that’s a request to file a case.
Furthermore, the letter notes, “According to Section 35(3) of the Road Transport Act 2018, the owner or driver of a contract carriage must take passengers to any destination within the route permit area and cannot charge more than the fare shown on the meter.” If this law is breached, “under Section 81, the offender may face imprisonment for up to 6 months or a fine of up to 50,000 Taka, or both, and the driver could also incur an additional penalty of one point deduction.
