A local Awami League leader and murder suspect, Abdul Majid, escaped police custody in Habiganj’s Baniachong upazila while still wearing handcuffs. He was being transported by boat when he jumped into a haor (wetland) and fled and Escapes Police with Handcuffs. Police confirm multiple teams are now working to recapture him.

Who is Abdul Majid?

Abdul Majid is a resident of Bagahata village under Kagapasha Union in Baniachong upazila, Habiganj. He holds the position of Vice-President of the 6 No. Kagapasha Union Awami League.

He is an accused in nine separate murder cases; all linked to a tragic incident during a local protest movement.

Background of the Murder Cases

The cases against Majid are related to the anti-discrimination student-people’s movement in Baniachong. During this movement, nine people were reportedly shot dead by police. Abdul Majid was named in the case filed over the killings.

How He Escaped

On Monday (August 4) at around 12:30 PM, police arrested Abdul Majid from his home. They were transporting him by boat to the police station. During the journey, he suddenly jumped into the Bagahata haor (wetland) and Escapes Police with Handcuffs.

Police Confirmation

Additional Police Superintendent of Baniachong Circle, Probas Kumar Singh, confirmed the incident.

“আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা আব্দুল মজিদ ৯টি হত্যা মামলার আসামি। তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করে থানায় নিয়ে আসার সময় তার কিছু লোকজন প্রতিবন্ধকতা সৃষ্টি করলে সে কৌশলে নৌকা থেকে লাফ দিয়ে পালিয়ে যায়।”

Translation:
“Awami League leader Abdul Majid is accused in nine murder cases. While bringing him to the station after arrest, some of his people created obstacles. Taking advantage of the situation, he cleverly jumped from the boat and escaped.”

Law enforcement agencies have launched a massive manhunt. Multiple police teams are active in the area, trying to capture Majid as quickly as possible.
