At last, the newborn baby girl abandoned at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital has been handed over. On Sunday (7 December), the administration officially transferred the child to a childless government officer’s family during a ceremony held at Arbind Child Hospital. The handover was conducted according to the decision of the Upazila Child Welfare Board.
Hospital sources confirmed that on November 6, a mother left her newborn daughter on a bed in the children’s ward of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. Since then, the baby received treatment under the supervision of the head of the pediatric department, Prof. Dr. Nurul Islam.
When complications arose later, she was shifted to the ICU care unit of Arbind Child Hospital, where she eventually recovered after more than a month of treatment.
Shamim Kabir, Secretary of Arbind Child Hospital, confirmed that the ICU doctors and nurses cared for the baby with the dedication of a mother, ensuring her recovery. During the handover ceremony, Prof. Dr. Md. Nurul Islam said,

গত ৬ নভেম্বর সন্ধ্যা ৬টা ৪০ মিনিটে ওই নবজাতককে হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হয়েছে। হাসপাতালের ভর্তি রেজিস্ট্রারে ঠিকানা উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে ইনছুয়ারা, শাহিনুর, আলাদিপুর, ফুলবাড়ী। আর বাজারের ব্যাগে নবজাতকের মায়ের রেখে যাওয়া চিরকুটে লেখা রয়েছে, ‘আমি মুসলিম। আমি একজন হতভাগী। পরিস্থিতির স্বীকার হয়ে বাচ্চা রেখে গেলাম। দয়া করে কেউ নিয়ে যাবেন। বাচ্চার জন্মতারিখ ৪ নভেম্বর ২০২৫ (মঙ্গলবার)। এগুলো সব বাচ্চার ওষুধ…।
Translation: “The newborn was admitted to the hospital on 6 November at 6:40 pm. The address provided in the hospital register was Insuara, Shahinur, Aladipur, Fulbari. A note left by the mother in a shopping bag stated, ‘I am a Muslim. I am an unfortunate woman. Circumstances forced me to leave this baby. Please someone take her. Her date of birth is 4 November 2025 (Tuesday). These are her medicines…’”
Following board instructions, Arbind Child Hospital was requested to provide advanced medical care, and they successfully restored the baby’s health. After an announcement for caregiver selection, 15 applications were submitted. Upon thorough verification, a childless couple from Naogaon district was chosen. Assistant Commissioner (Land), Md. Borhan Uddin, said,
শিশুটিকে লালন-পালন করার জন্য এবং চিকিৎসা প্রদানে অরবিন্দ শিশু হাসপাতাল যে অবদান রেখেছে তা সত্যিই প্রশংসনীয়। আমরা চাই এই শিশুটি একদিন আলোকিত মানুষ হয়ে দেশ ও জাতির নিবেদিত প্রাণ হবে।
Translation: “The contribution of Arbind Child Hospital in providing care and treatment is truly commendable. We hope this child grows up to become a bright, dedicated citizen of the country.”
According to Upazila Social Services Officer Golam Azam, the baby was handed over after evaluating all 15 applications in accordance with the law and the decision of the Child Welfare Board. Under the Child Act 2013, newborns without identity are legally given to childless families with the consent of the board.
