Bangladesh and India’s Army Chiefs Maintained Constant Communication on August 5

On August 5, during a significant political shift in Bangladesh, the army chiefs of Bangladesh and India maintained constant communication. Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi confirmed this in a press conference in Delhi on January 13.

The political change in Bangladesh occurred after a student-led movement resulted in the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who later flew to India.

In response to questions about the situation in Bangladesh, General Dwivedi stated, “At present, there is no possibility of any attack from either side. I maintain regular contact with the army chief of Bangladesh.” He added that even during the political changes, both countries’ militaries continued to engage and communicate. A video conference between the two army chiefs was held on November 20, underscoring the ongoing military collaboration.

On August 5, Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh aboard a military aircraft and arrived at Hindon Airbase near Delhi, where she has remained for over five months.

General Dwivedi’s comments suggest that the former Prime Minister’s departure was carefully coordinated between the military forces of both nations.

He also referred to a statement from Bangladesh’s army chief, saying, “As he mentioned, India is important for Bangladesh, and the same is true for us. We are neighbors, and mutual understanding is essential. Any conflict would harm both countries.”

Despite the political changes in Bangladesh, the military relationship between India and Bangladesh remains stable. However, General Dwivedi noted that full normalization of relations will only be possible when a new, elected government takes office in Bangladesh.

He concluded, “Until an elected government is in place in Bangladesh, full normalization may not happen, but the military cooperation between our countries continues smoothly and strongly.”
