Bangladesh Bank Orders AI Use to Monitor Online Betting

Bangladesh

Online gambling is becoming an increasingly significant issue in Bangladesh, resulting in significant social and criminal problems. To help halt these illicit activities, the Bangladesh Bank (BB) has responded by taking decisive measures.

New Directive to Banks and Financial Institutions

On 28 May, the Payment Systems Department of Bangladesh Bank issued a new directive. This order has been sent to all banks, financial institutions, and mobile financial service (MFS) providers.

The main purpose of this directive is to increase surveillance and monitoring of transactions that may be connected to online gambling.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Recommended

The Bangladesh Bank is asking all financial institutions to start using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. These tools can help to:

  • Detect suspicious transactions
  • Identify customers or merchants involved in online gambling
  • Prevent illegal money transfers through digital platforms

Respond Promptly to Suspected Users

The directive states that in the event that a consumer or retailer is discovered to be engaged in online gambling:

  • The bank or institution must take immediate action
  • Law enforcement agencies must be informed right away
  • Detailed records of such actions should be kept for investigation

Raise Public Awareness

The central bank is also asking financial institutions to educate customers. They should raise awareness about the dangers and negative effects of online gambling, especially among young people.

Merchant Area Restriction

Banks that register merchants must also make sure those businesses are operating only within their declared physical area. If they provide business information for a certain location, they must not operate outside that location.

Follow the Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025

The directive highlights that all institutions must follow the new Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025. This law is part of a broader move to strengthen digital safety and control online crime in Bangladesh.

Immediate Enforcement Required

The Bangladesh Bank has ordered that this new rule be implemented immediately. All related banks and financial institutions are expected to strictly follow the instructions.

Ensuring safer digital transactions and shielding society from the negative impacts of online gambling are two important goals of this effort.
