Bangladesh Cricket at Risk of ICC Ban?

Bangladesh

Faruque Ahmed Asked to Step Down

Faruque Ahmed, the current President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has said that the government no longer wants him to stay in his position.

Faruque became BCB President after Nazmul Hasan left the post on August 21, 2024. On May 28, 2025, he was called to a meeting by Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, the Youth and Sports Affairs Adviser.

During the meeting, Faruque was told directly that he is no longer wanted in his current role.

“The advisor said that they don’t want to continue with me,
I have not made any decision yet. Let’s see what happens.”

Why This Could Be a Big Problem

If Faruque Ahmed is removed without resigning voluntarily, this could be considered government interference.

According to the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, any form of government interference in a national cricket board is not allowed. In the past, countries like Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe were banned by the ICC for similar reasons.

Therefore, the ICC has the authority to suspend or prohibit Bangladesh from playing international cricket if it does not manage this matter carefully.

Who Could Replace Faruque?

Aminul Islam, a former captain of the Bangladesh national team, is likely to be the next BCB President.

Aminul is currently working as a Development Officer for the ICC. He has reportedly asked for three months’ notice to leave his ICC job and prepare to take on the BCB role.

The next BCB election is in October, so Aminul may be preparing to take over around that time.

Government Meetings and Speculations

Aminul returned to Dhaka earlier this week, and since then, many people have been talking about changes in BCB leadership. He has reportedly had meetings with senior government officials, and it is believed that the possibility of him becoming BCB President was discussed.

Faruque Ahmed has had a long history with the BCB. He played seven ODIs for Bangladesh and served as the Chief Selector twice, in 2003–2007 and 2013–2016. However, he resigned early during his second term because he did not agree with changes in the selection panel.

National Sports Council’s Role

The National Sports Council (NSC) has appointed both Faruque Ahmed and local coach Nazmul Abedin as new directors of the BCB. They replaced Jalal Yunus and Ahmed Sajjadul Alam. Yunus resigned, but Alam refused to step down and left the decision to the NSC.

This change comes after Nazmul Hasan, the long-time BCB President, resigned and left for London following student protests against the recently dissolved Sheikh Hasina government.

What’s Next?
  • If Faruque Ahmed resigns voluntarily, Bangladesh may avoid ICC trouble.
  • If he is forced out, the ICC might ban Bangladesh cricket over government interference.
  • Now, everyone is waiting for the BCB meeting on May 31 to make a final judgement.
