Bangladesh High Commission in Agartala Attacked: Students Protesting for Apology

On December 2, 2024, the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura, was attacked by members of the Hindu Sangharsh Samity. The group stormed the premises, removed the Bangladeshi flag, set it on fire, and caused minor damage. India’s Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack, calling it “deeply regrettable.”

In Bangladesh, protests erupted at Dhaka University, with student groups demanding that India formally apologize for the incident. The protests were organized by various student bodies, including the Inquilab Mancha and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The protests in Dhaka saw students chanting slogans such as “Gulami na Azadi” (No to servitude, Yes to freedom) and “Delhi na Dhaka, Dhaka Dhaka” (Delhi, not Dhaka, Dhaka, Dhaka). They called for the Indian government to take responsibility for the attack and ensure the safety of Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions.

Meanwhile, in Tripura, the local Hotel Association held an emergency meeting, deciding to temporarily halt services to Bangladeshi nationals, citing security concerns. The tensions also grew as Hindu groups in the region staged protests, including the burning of an effigy of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the interim Prime Minister of Bangladesh, by another group the previous day. The incident follows increasing political tensions between India and Bangladesh over border and religious issues.
